I Love You John Chow!!

I amso excited! John Chow has bought an ad on this website through Entrecard. I really feel like I have arrived now! Thank you John Chow you have made my day.

I have been wondering whether him advertising on my blog may as good for me as me advertising on his. I guess I will never really know, but I will certainly be keeping a close eye on all of my stats and seeing what my traffic is doing.

Spending Entrecard Points

I have been wondering what to do with all of the Entrecard points I seem to be accumulating. I did try advertising on cheap blogs initially and did not get many clicks as a result. I have considered selling them on eBay. I was also wondering whether to give some away in a contest promoting my blog. However, I have made a decision to save up lots and use them to advertise on http://www.johnchow.com. I feel that it is well worth experimenting and seeing what sort of results, having one days exposure on this hugely popular blog will do for me. There is a 12 day waiting time for the ad and it costs 4096 points which is very expensive - in fact among the dearest sites to advertise on. I have a theory that advertising on some dearer sites will be much more effective than on cheaper ones as hopefully they will have more traffic and more clicks. I will report back if it works.

House Decisions

I had a great conversation with my husband last night. We were watching 'Location,Location,Location' where couples were looking for their 'house for life' meaning the house they wanted to brig their family up in and stay in for the rest of their lives. Watching this made me realise that there are so many positives about my current house that I would love to say here forever. The house seems small when there are lots of guests but for the four of us it is fine. We have a lovely kitchen diner which we designed ourselves and also a small cloakroom which needs refurbishing on the ground floor. The first floor has a lounger diner and a study and the top floor has a master bed room with build in wardrobe which also need refurbishing and an en-suite which we had done up last year and is beautiful. We also have another bedroom and the family bathroom. We have a small yard at the back and a driveway with parking for one car in the front plus a small garage with a Belfast sink and enough storage for logs and a few other things. The house needs decorating throughout and the flooring needs replacing.

We have decided to put priority on paying off the mortgage and then do the work on the house. We were considering converting the loft so that we could ave an enormous master suite, but it would make the house 4 stories which would not be practical and would be very expensive. We have decided to instead, make the old dining room into a single bedroom so that the boys can have a room each. This will be much cheaper ad will mean that we will not take so long to save up to have all of the work done on the house.

I now feel really happy, both about the fact that we do not have to move away and that we have found our ideal home. I am so looking forward to when we have made it look really nice but I know that it will be more fantastic to have paid off the mortgage! I just need to start working harder to bring in the money to pay for it all.

Pay to Click

I am a member of quite a lot of pay to click sites. These are website which pay you to click advertisements. Typically they let you click the advertisements once every 24 hours. They pay various amounts and each has a different pay out amount. I thought it might be useful if I did a short review about each one that I am a member of.

Bux.to
This website pays 1 cent per click and the same for referral clicks. You can cash out yo Alertpay or their credit card once you get $10 and there is an opportunity to buy referrals and upgrade membership to get more clicks each days and to get paid more per click.

Clixsense
They pay various amounts per click starting at 1 cent. Most clicks are for this amount. You can only cash out by cheque and you can choose how much the cheque is for with a minimum of $10. You get paid $0.10 per referral and also get a bonus if they upgrade their membership up to five levels deep. Membership upgrades gives more opportunities to click and costs $10 a year.

Daily Clicks

WordLinx
This site pays 1 cent per click. You can cash out at $10 to Paypal. You earn $0.05 for every referral that joins up and get 5% of anything they earn or spend on advertising. If they upgrade their membership you earn $1 bonus. Membership upgrades tend to be more beneficial for advertisers.

Adbux
This used to one of the most popular pay to click sites as you could earn 1 cent per click and cashout when you reached $10. They pay to Alertpay or their credit card but have not been paying out for a long time due to cash flow problems and now by points rather than cash. You can earn more per click if you upgrade your membership, as well as getting a bonus if your referrals upgrade or buy referrals or advertising.

Bux.3This iste pays 1 cent per click and has quite a lots of opportunities to click each day. The minimum amount needed to cash out is $10. You can upgrade to earn more money per click and more clicks. They pay to Alertpay.

Linkgrand
This site pays a third of a cent per click and has varying amounts of clicks per day. Minimum payout amount os $5 and they pay to Paypal. You get 30% of what your referrals earn.

Neobux
This iste pays $0.01 per click and half for referral clicks. The minimum payout amount starts at $2 and increases by $1 per cash out until it reaches $10 when it stays at that levl. payments are made to Alertpay. You can purchase referrals and upgrade your membership and if you do this you will receive higher payments.

Isobel Marco
This is a fairly new website which pays $0.01 per click and just over half of that for referral clicks. The minimum payout amount is $9 and they pay to Alertpay. You can buy referrals and upgrade your membership if you wish to and you will then get more money per click.

Getting Out Of Debt

I have had quite a lot of experience now of trying to get out of debt by paying off my mortgage early. It has made me realise what hard work it is and I feel especially sorry for those people who have massive debts, small incomes and no left over cash for luxuries. I do find myself wishing that I could afford to buy some new clothes and I am lucky that if I really wanted some, I could just forget paying some extra money off the mortgage and get some.

I also realise that I am very lucky being self-disciplined. I know that many people would be tempted to just pay the £66,000 extra interest and not bother to get the mortgage paid off early. This saving in interest is what really keeps me motivated and I can imagine the feeling of relief when the debt is gone.

I was thinking the other day about what I wanted for the future and I would love if my husband could be at home with me all of the time, take his share in the child care and household chores, we could do more things as a family and he could even start up his own small business, which is something he has always wanted to do. Hopefully if we clear the mortgage we will be in a position where we will be better able to allow this to happen.

www.888ladies.com is a games site where you can play all sorts of things online. Traffic Increase

I have recently seen quite a big increase in traffic to this blog. I have been trying several different things in order to achieve this all based on ideas by an online friend - Melbel. The first thing I did was to install the Alexa toolbar. This should help to increase the Alexa rating on my sites, as I visit them most days. Secondly I installed the Stumble Upon tool bar and stumbled my sites and a few others that I liked. I also exchanged stumbles with some of my friends. Lastly and most significantly I signed up to Entrecard. I did explain a little about this in a previous article. I have found that by clicking on other peoples sites they have usually come and visited my site. I was not sure as to how much use this was as it is likely that they just visit the site, make a click and leave again. However, I have found that not only has my traffic increased, but my Adsense click throughs have as well, which implies that my visitors are finding something worth reading in my advertising. I will definitely keep working at Entrecard and hope that the traffic increase can be sustained.

Website Review : Epocrates

Epocrates are a company which provide medical software for medical staff. They can work on PDA's and other hand held electronic devises, which means that they can be easily carried in a lab coat. Their software can be used for checking side effects of drugs or to find out the compatibility of different drugs. They even can provide a mobile CME to help complete courses more quickly. Their drug reference guide comes with free Pocket PC, Palm and Windows Mobile software. Recently they have developed a version for the Blackberry and are working on one for the iPhone. So whatever hand held devise you use, you could have medical information, a few finger presses away. This announcement was paid for by Epocrates.

Website Review : Best Price Toys

Best Price Toys is a company which sells a range of outdoor toys including swing sets. They have a great selection of play sets which include slides, swings and climbing apparatus all in one. If these are out of your budget they do have a selection of cheaper toys and a lot of items are currently reduced. It is well worth a look, if you have been trying to find something to amuse the children during the summer holidays.

Website Review : Merchant Focus

Merchant Focus is a company which specialise in credit card processing solutions. They have a particular system called authorize.net and they are running a special offer until the end of the month where the set up will be free and the transaction costs will be just 25 cents plus 2.19%. This is a great deal considering what some companies charge and so it could be well worth taking a look and seeing whether their solution will work for you and your website.

Mortage Progress

Sadly I have not yet managed to pay any money off my mortgage this month. I am hoping that I will be able to pay some by the end of the month, but despite saving on grocery shopping it has turned out to be a rather expensive month. It was my husbands birthday this month and is the boys birthday next month so that added some expense (including a present and eating out). I had to pay for the car tax disc which was £120 and the MOT (including a new tyre). I will need to renew the car insurance and breakdown cover next month and I am giving my parents a large monetary gift for their wedding anniversary so I need to keep money back for that.

With regards to my earnings, they have been better than last month but still not brilliant. I have found a few new ways to increase my earnings, so hopefully that will start to pay off soon.

Entrecard

You may have noticed that I have joined Entrecard. I am still working out how to make full use of it. You can earn points by clicking on the Entrecard logo on other sites. This can generate a lot of traffic but many people find that it just generates a 'hit' and nothing else. I guess it is a good idea to try to make your blog stand out so that people are interested in it and read it or leave a comment. I have found that my traffic and Adsense stats have been much improved, so I will keep messing around with it and see if the trend continues.

Earnings so Far

It is just past half way through the month and I realise I have not written much about my earnings this month so far. I have been busy doing some writing - someone has paid me to write a 20,000 ebook, so that has kept me busy! I have finished it now, just waiting for approval from the customer. I have earned more than I did last month already, which is good news. My main earnings were from Google Adsense, some money from selling blogposts and links and some article writing money makes up the main bulk of the earnings so far. I am working hard to get some decent money coming in over the next few months.

I am still working on being frugal too. My credit card this month was about 3/4 of what it normally is and considering my husbands birthday present and birthday lunch plus a car MOT and cost of new tyre were on there, I was really pleased. I would love to keep it below £500 next month but with food, fuel and the car tax and insurance going on there, I think it will be quite a challenge. We are already saving £5-£10 a week just on milk, bread and fruit so that it a great start.

Selling on EBay

I am in the prices of writing an ebook for someone on how to sell on eBay. It has reminded me of how very important it is to do lots of research on the site to constantly check how things are selling. When I first started selling on there I was constantly checking what had sold so that I could learn about what type of stock to sell and what was becoming popular. After a while I did not have time to do this and so stopped, that was about 3 years ago. Now I am finding that sales are very poor. I have put this down to the amount of competition and the increasing demand for cheap goods. However, maybe I am just not moving with the times because I am no longer doing the research....

Website Review : Spa Scenes

Having a hot tub is a fantastic luxury that many of us would like. But if you do have one, then it can be hard to make them look nice. To add to the relaxing atmosphere, Spa Scenes can help you to imagine that you are on a desert island, beach or waterfall. How they do this is but selling you pictures to put on the inside of your hot tub covers. These pictures are photographs of lovely scenes such as the one on this post. Imagine looking at that as you relax in your warm, bubbly hot tub.

You may be concerned about the picture fitting in your hot tub cover and how easy they are to install but this is all kept very simple as the pictures can be trimmed to fit and not special tool or installation are necessary. They are also designed to last and so are fully water resistant and even resistant to the chemicals that you have in the hot tub.

Website Review : Firefold

Firefold is a company which can supply a large range of technology products online. They pride themselves on their customer service and so whether you are buying HDMI switches or some cable, you will be sure to get the best service. They state that their prices are affordable and they even offer same day shipping if your order reaches them in time.

Next Week

Well my husband has next week off work but I am determined to remain focussed. Last time he had a week off, I switched off and relaxed and it took me 3 weeks to start being focussed again and even then I was not fully determined again until this week - so it took 2 months to get back on the ball. I am not prepared for that to happen again, so although I might be taking some time to go out in the day, I will still be working extremely hard and focussing on bringing the money in!

Busy day

I had a really busy day yesterday, which was fantastic. I wrote about 10 short articles, sold a link and started writing an ebook for someone - I planned it out and write the first 5000 words (the first quarter). It was great to really get my teeth into something fun and knowing that I was actually earning money most of the day rather than looking around for work. I have a much more positive feeling about this month, despite the fact that my husband has next week off work. I am going to be careful not to switch my brain into 'holiday' mode and although I will be doing things with him and the children I will make sure that I do not lose my focus like I did last time he had a holiday.

Website Review : Diet Pills

Consumer Price Watch are a company which compare prices of certain products to let you know which providers are the cheapest. They have recently revealed the top 10 diet pills by comparing them on a series of things including price, value, long term benefits, safety, packaging and weight-loss potential. Therefore, before you purchase your next lot of diet pills it would be well worth taking a look at this website and finding out which are best value for money and the most effective.

Making Excuses

Over the last few months I have earn't less money than I had hoped. My great total in April could not be matched in the following months. I put this down to the credit crunch. However, I have been looking at other blogs and finding out what other people have made online over the last few months. Some people have been doing increasingly well and John Chow made $40,000 in June. This has made me realise that I am using the credit crunch as an excuse and I need to just work harder in finding more work and really knuckle down and get on with it!

End of Grocery Experiment

So at the end of my experiment I can now reveal that after spending £1.19 on a delicious chocolate cookie yesterday and adding on an extra pound for my husbands chocolate bar spending at work, I ended the two weeks having spent £105.83. I was really hoping to spend only £100 altogether but I knew that realistically this was asking a lot and so did give myself a budget of £125 which I was well under. If I had to buy toiletries that would have been higher, but I am hoping that I can realistically keep my monthly grocery spending down to below £350 a month on a regular basis meaning that I can save at least £200 average per month. This adds up to £2400 a year which is fantastic!

Safety in the Workplace

One thing that really puts me off employing someone to help me with my business is health and safety. As I work from a home which has loads of stairs and children running round, I feel that insurance would be really high and I might be likely to have to pay accident compensation if I did not have expensive insurance.

One thing that I do to protect my customers from health and safety risks is not let them inside the house! I make sure that anyone coming to pick up goods does not come over the doorstep. There have been two exceptions, when people wanted to have a rummage through the stock that I had available and I explained to them before they started that they needed to be careful of the stairs. I have also had a few volunteers work for me who had their own insurance. I gave them both a few pointers with regards to health and safety, warning them to be careful on the stairs and not to leave anything on the floor that could be slipped on or tripped over. I was careful to show them the cables that were possible trip hazards and show them the safest places to leave drinks so they were not likely to be spilt. So even if you are working from home, there are a few simple things you can do to make your workplace safe, not leave trailing cables, keep floors clear of hazards and take care on stairs especially if carrying anything.

Week Two Spending - Days Five and Six

I have been being really careful as I know I am close to my spending limit already. I bought some milk yesterday for £2.00 and my husband bought a chocolate bar at work for $0.50.

I am going out for the day today so will be able to hold off spending money on bread until tomorrow which means that my total spend will be £49.96 unless I buy anything today. I am so pleased as the money that I have saved will be put towards the cost of my front door being painted and therefore that money does not have to come from the money I have to put towards the mortgage later in the month.

The Credit Crunch

'The Credit Crunch' seems to be the phrase on everyone's lips at the moment. Everyone in the UK is noticing fuel price increases and food price increases. I do wonder whether we are all more aware of it because there is so much on the news about it at the moment and whether we would not even look at prices if we had not been made aware of the price increases.

I must admit that before I started my budget shopping, I had no idea how much I was paying for a loaf of bread or bottle of milk. I just bought it form the most convenient place and wouldn't think twice about popping a few extras in the basket too. I was shopping almost daily at my local Waitrose and often buying treats and comics for the children and treats for me too. Since becoming aware of just how much I spend on groceries each month has had an amazing effect on my shopping trends.

It is also interesting how many people seem to be talking about prices and especially with regard to fuel and food. My Mother was telling me that the price of butter is predicted to be £7.50 a packet in 10 years time and that was worrying for her as she will be living off a government pension which is unlikely to increase significantly in value.

This got me thinking about two things. How very important it is to have a decent retirement income which will not only be able to keep you living in comfort but that is likely to increase with inflation. Also to make sure that you do not get too used to living a luxurious lifestyle if you think you will not be able to afford it in the future - this sort of spending habit is very hard to break and it is better to remain frugal rather than get too used to spending and then have to stuggle and suffer in retirement.

Learning About making Money

It is well worth looking at lots of different blogs to get ideas on how to make money. the very best way is to find people who are already making money online and follow their example or at least pick up some tips and pointers. If you take a look at the Blog to Earn Carnival you will find links to a diverse set of money making articles which you are sure to be able to pick up tips from.

Week Two Spending - Day Four

We went to Tesco and Waitrose today :

Waitrose shopping - £2.60
Tesco Shopping - £32.60

I also found out that my husband bought two bags of doughnuts to take to work so need to add on another £1 to the total. This means that we have nearly spent the budget with four days to go. We are pretty well stocked up now with fruit and veg, milk and our other staple foods. We will need bread but hopefully that is all we will need and we can stick to the budget....just hope I do not get any chocolate cravings!

Total spending - £47.76

Saturday, July 05, 2008

Week Two Spending - Day Three

I found out that my husband took a pack of doughnuts into work yesterday and they cost £1 so they need to be added into the spending for this week. Normally on a Saturday we do a small shop in Waitrose and we needed milk and pan scourers so promised the boys we would go in. I love it in there as the customers and staff are so helpful and friendly and the boys know all the staff and they always talk to them. Going in there today reminded me of how nice it was compared to Iceland, where we have been shopping, where the staff stacking the shelves pull a face at you if you try to reach something and get in their way. We still went in for milk as they are running their special deal still. This is what we bought:

Home Bargains
6 Pan Scoureres - £0.49 (cost £1.15 for 3 in Waitrose)
2 packets crisps - £0.25
Green Grocers
1 banana - £0.19
Iceland 2 x 4 pint milk - £2.00
Waitrose
2 avocados - £1.59
TOTAL - £4.52

TOTAL SO FAR - £17.08

Friday, July 04, 2008

Spending - Week Two, Day One and Two

I have just managed to get out of my husband how much he spent in Waitrose yesterday, so here is the spending amounts from yesterday, a bit late.

Waitrose shopping
6 pints milk - £2.12
Wallaby Bar - £0.79
2 x fromage frais - £1.30
Iceland shopping
7 small bananas - £1.00
9 small apples - £1.75
mushrooms - £1.00
strawberries - £2.00
My husband had a cooked breakfast at work today costing £1.60 as well. I have not asked him if he bought any chocolate bars at work - I think he is trying to cut them out so I thought it was better not to remind him about them!

Total spending - £11.56

Grocery Budget - End of Week One

Yesterday I spent £3.60 taking the total weeks spending to £53.68. Considering that I normally spend more than that in one weekend shop and then probably an additional £50 during the week on various bits and pieces, I am rather pleased with the result. It is not something that we will be able to sustain as I have been using up things from the cupboard and freezer and not bought any nappies or toiletries but I will be working hard at it again for the next seven days to see whether I can learn anything else from the experience.

Being Frugal

It is so interesting that as I am trying to be frugal with my grocery spending, I am also being more careful about everything else. I have for example changed my washing habits. I am drying more washing outside with this hot weather that we are having. I have also decided not to wash the children's towels each day - I used to do it when they were babies as they were often sick in them. It is just a habit and unnecessary now. I also wash my pyjamas each day which is not necessary - especially as I shower each morning, so I have stopped doing that as often. Hopefully this should cut down some electricity and water costs.

Grocery Budget - Thoughts so far

You may have been reading my blog this week and already know about my grocery challenge. If not, I am basically trying to cut my £550 a month food/household/toiletry bill to £250 a month. I have allocated £50 a week and kept £50 in reserve.

I am on day six and today I blew the budget! We went shopping in Tesco this evening and spent over £35.29. However, we normally spend over £70 and so I was pleased with this reduction. This means that in addition to the £14.79 already spent, we are over the £50 weekly food budget (£50.08). I have to buy bread tomorrow as well and I know that my husband has been buying chocolate bars at work and not telling me how much they cost or how often he has bought them.

I have found out a whole host of things already from trying to do this.

- I still do not know how a family can survive on less than £50 a week (I have not even had to buy nappies, wipes, toiletries, potatoes, pasta, rice, couscous, tea, coffee, frozen veg etc)
- I have discovered that shopping around can make a huge difference but is time consuming
- Some 'cheap' shops have certain items which are hugely overpriced
- Unhealthy food seems to be much cheaper
- Shopping in budget shops tempts me less and I make less impulse buys
- A good way to cut down on the food bill is just to eat less or make things go further - water down fruit juice, liquid soap and do not buy bottled water.

I will certainly be continuing with some of my frugal behaviour as it just seems silly to pay more money for food which can be easily bought for less. I have, however, decided to stop the project early - not yet, but it will only last for two weeks instead of the originally planned four. This is because my husbands birthday falls in the third week and I do not want him to suffer because of me being frugal. He is having a week off work so we may be going out and eating out sometime. He works very hard and it will be nice to spoil him.

Great News!

I have had a fantastic day so far! Firstly my payment of £54.94 from Google Adsense appeared in my bank account. I am also still happy from yesterday as I was paid from two pay to click sites Global Cash Clicks sent me £3.59 within a week of requesting payment and Adpaid sent me £1.33 within half an hour of requesting it. I won $25 for coming third in the referral contest at Free cash Money Gifts as well. I have also been featured in the proven blog earners carnival again. All in all a really great start to a month that I feel very positive about.
