The Giving of Gifts

I sometimes find it so difficult to get a balance when buying gifts for people. There are so many opportunities to buy gifts for friends and family, not just Christmas and birthdays. When you visit people it is nice to take them something, when they achieve something, anniversaries, engagements, weddings etc. It can end up costing a lot of money for those sports achievements, exam success, new job, get well, engagement and dance recital gifts and many of us find it difficult to manage.

It is worth bearing in mind that a congratulations letter or card can be treasured as much as a gift. It can also be healthy to not reward people with gifts all the time as it could get them in to the habit of expecting them as they et older and perhaps spending more than they can afford.

It does feel great to be generous and give things to people but it is the gesture that is appreciated. This means that a home made gift or card can be seen as something that is as welcome as a bought gift. So why not come up with some ideas of things to give that you have the skills to make. You may be good at cards, you may bake, cook, paint, sew, knit or whatever. You must have a skill that you can apply to making things that you are able to give as gifts. Just have a brainstorming session and you could be surprised at what you come up with.
