Is Local Shopping too Expensive?

I always think that it is good to support my local economy and try to shop local if I can. This is not just in the independent shops, although I love supporting them, but also in the local chain stores. I feel that they support the local economy by employing local people, who would not have a job if they closed. Plus those local people are more likely to shop locally themselves if they work locally.

However, shopping in some local shops can be more expensive. For example, although the local bookshop gives some discounts it is still cheaper to order a book online from Amazon and so it somehow feels silly paying that extra money. However, sometimes it is much better value choosing the closest store to my location, as it means that I do not have to pay postage if I would otherwise order online or transport if I would have to travel to a different shop.
